This weeks first video of the week is from one of Hip hop’s most respected rapper, Common. This song comes from his 5th LP Electric Circus, released in 2002, which actually was his least appreciated album in sales but most eclectic in style and perhaps pushed the boundary in what is defined as hip hop before listeners were ever ready. The song features Mary J. Blige on the hook as well as in the video. The reason I like this video and song so much……is because I get choked up watching it….(Don’t Judge) Common is a timeless poet in the rap game and demands the respect from those even at the top of the art form called hip hop. Jay Z admittedly in his Black Album, the song Moment of Clarity writes that “truthfully I wanna rhyme like Common Sense, but I did five mill, I aint been rhymin like Common since.” He was talking about the intellectual genius of Common’s lyrics but since he (JayZ) “dumbed down” his lyrics, and his albums began selling into the millions, he continued with what sold. But none the less, he, as well as the rest of the music community recognizes Common’s ability to make good conscious music. Here is his song and video, Come Close.
The second video I would like to share comes from the BBoy Ho Down held in Texas each year. The reason I love this clip so much is one because of the Philip Glass song and then more importantly the great house dancing and bboying. So enjoy!
